Dynamic Aviation Helps Massachusetts Aerial Spray for Mosquitoes to Fight EEE Virus Threat
Pilots cover more than 300,000 acres in two nights of aerial spraying across southeastern part of state to reduce chances of virus spreading to humans
Bridgewater, Va., Aug. 27, 2010 – Dynamic Aviation, a leading provider of innovative aviation solutions to government and commercial organizations worldwide, announced today the completion of its latest custom aerial spray project in which pilots treated more than 300,000 acres across the southeastern part of Massachusetts in two nights. The company played a key role in helping the state combat the threat of Eastern equine encephalitis, a deadly disease carried by infected mosquitoes that had recently shown signs of potentially spreading to the human population in some areas.
“Everything went flawlessly,” said Mark Buffone, executive director of the State Reclamation and Mosquito Control Board for Massachusetts, during a public briefing with Massachusetts Department of Public Health commissioner John Auerbach.
Dynamic Aviation was selected for the project because of its past work with the state and its deep expertise in customized aerial applications in the important area of protecting public health.
“We’re pleased to have been able to support this time-sensitive request from the state of Massachusetts,” said Michael Stoltzfus, president and CEO of Dynamic Aviation. “Many of the missions we support for government customers are about saving lives. This is one of those cases, and it’s an honor to be able to help.”
Dynamic Aviation was awarded the contract in 2003 and last month received an extension of the contract for an additional two years. Under the contract, the company is responsible for being on call for assignments when needed, and within each project collaborates heavily with mosquito control organizations at the state level to distribute aerial spray across designated geographic locations. Pesticide is distributed through rotary atomizers attached to customized Beechcraft King Air 90s to control adult mosquito populations. Each of the twin-turbine aircraft is uniquely designed to fly over heavily congested areas, and the company’s fleet is capable of treating more than 450,000 acres in a single night.
Mosquito control is an active business area for Dynamic Aviation, especially during summer and hurricane season. Dynamic Aviation and its partner, Clarke, have more than 60 contracts established nationwide with government organizations that can be activated at any time simply with a phone call.
In recent years, Dynamic Aviation’s aerial application team has sprayed more than 5 million acres across the nation. The company actively supported government-funded relief efforts following 2005 hurricanes Katrina and Rita and sprayed more than 3 million acres in the state of Texas in 2008 following hurricanes Dolly and Ike.
Dynamic Aviation has been treating large areas for pests such as mosquitoes and gypsy moths since 1981. The company has a 75-year legacy of providing aviation solutions to help government and commercial customers meet special-mission requirements.
